Avocados are great for the heart, brain, skin, hair and intestines, but Italian artist Daniele Barresi has found another use for the popular fruit. He uses green flesh as his canvas to create incredibly intricate avocado carvings. His food sculptures are so impressive they even won him awards. He is the two-time world champion sculpture designer of the WACS championship (both in 2013 and 2014) and, in 2015, he was invited to be one of the contest’s judges.
It’s easy to see why Barresi was so successful in his chosen art form. His avocado carvings are not only visually impressive, but clearly demonstrate his expert skill. Each project can take hours to complete, but Barresi enjoys every moment. He told My Modern Met: “Like we say in Italy, if you love what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter how long it takes, because you’re going to enjoy whatever time you’re doing.”
From nature-inspired patterns to carved birds and other creatures, Barresi turns avocados into incredible works of art. And while he is famous for his avocado carvings, he also carves other fruits, vegetables, soap and even resin. “I really enjoy carving, especially watermelons, because they remind me of my country of origin”, he reveals. “Because of its colors – green, red and white – and also because of its size. I can choose any design, even if it takes a while. ”
Fruit carving allows Barresi to combine his love of food with his passion for art. “Carving is a peace of mind for me,” he shares. “I’ve always loved everything related to art and cooking, so sculpture gave me the possibility to combine the two.”
